Community Support

Each year there are both recurring and specialized events and activities in our community for which the Chapter provides monetary, manpower or other types of support.

The Military Welcome Center (MWC) at the Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport opened its door on 23 April 2012.  Since that time the center has provided a lounge in the terminal area for active, reserve, and retired military, veterans and families.  It is a place where they can relax in comfortable recliners, with computers, and a large screen TV while awaiting upcoming flights, inbound family and friends, and transportation after arrival.  The MWC is totally operated by volunteers (many of whom are Chapter members).  In 2023, the MWC served 2392 guests.  Additionally, our volunteers assisted with questions and free water to guests departing the baggage area.  The Lawton mayor recognized the efforts of the MWC by proclamation at city hall in February 2024.

Another recurring support function is manpower assistance to the Fort Sill National Cemetery.  For the last several years, Chapter members have been part of clean-up, flag emplacement and recovery and other generalized support such as Wreaths Across America to this wonderful final resting place for our Veterans.

We offer financial support to a number of area organizations.  The organizations supported vary from year-to-year based on perceived needs.  Among those supported in 2023 were: Lawton Food Bank, Lawton-Fort Sill Veterans Center, Fort Sill Veterans Resource Center, and Cohen Military Family Clinic.

One of the needs we became aware of in 2022 was the need for grounds maintenance support of a formerly abandoned cemetery where a World War I veteran is buried.  This support was recognized by National MOAA in the their magazine and digital newsletter and locally by the Lawton Constitution and KSWO television.
