Chapter Update

Greetings,

Since peaking in early January, Covid-19 virus rates have declined significantly both statewide and in our local area of Southwest Oklahoma, and they have continued to stay low as restrictions have been eased.  That’s great news!  In addition, many of our members are now fully vaccinated.  Oklahoma is one of a few states that have opened up vaccinations to everyone aged 16 and older. Appointments are available; so, if you haven’t been vaccinated yet, now is the time to log on to the Oklahoma Vaccine Portal and get scheduled.  With this in mind, we will again hold an in person General Membership Meeting in May.  This is our annual dinner meeting so please reserve the evening of 27 May now.  Invitations will be sent out in early May.  This will be a fantastic meeting that you will not want to miss and you will want to bring a guest.  Our speaker for the evening will be Jon Brenneman from MOAA Vacations.  He will be speaking about the exciting travel opportunities and benefits of travel available through MOAA Vacations.  Hope to see you there!!

Scholarship season is here and the Scholarship Fund Board is busy evaluating applications and selecting our scholarship recipients for 2021.  As you recall, last year we received final IRS approval for the SW Oklahoma Chapter of MOAA Scholarship Fund.  While the fund is doing well, donating to the fund is a year round affair as we hope to increase the number of scholarships we can offer in the future.  Last year we had nineteen Century Club members and this year we hope to match or exceed that number.  Century Club members are those who donate $100 or more to the scholarship fund.

One item of feedback that I have heard from you is that you would like to see the SW Oklahoma Chapter of MOAA do more for the military and veteran community in our local area.  Doing more sometimes requires more funding; over and above the little we collect in dues.  To that end, I have scheduled a fundraiser for our Chapter with VFW Post #5263.  If conditions permit, we will conduct a Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser on 18 September.  More details will be forthcoming as we get closer, however for now we will need volunteers to help prepare and serve the dinner and we will need to provide desserts for the meal.  Of course, we will all need to sell tickets to make this a success.

April is the month where we focus as an organization on making our voices heard on Capitol Hill.  Your April issue of Military Officer Magazine contains information on three key topics for this year’s Advocacy in Action.  You will also find tear-out letters for your use, or you can write your own.  A small personal hand written note on the tear-out letters will make them even more effective.  Especially this year, I ask you to make the effort to communicate with our congressional leadership.  Thanks.

The Chapter has recently submitted our application for a Level of Excellence Award for 2020.  Last year was a tough year, but as we prepared the submission, it was amazing to see everything that we were still able to accomplish.  Thanks for all that you do for the Chapter to make this worthwhile.

The Chapter remains strong and your continued membership is vital to our success.  We did have a small drop in membership last year and we are working hard to bring our membership level back to where it was and beyond.  If you have not renewed you membership this year, I ask you to do so now.   The most effective recruiter for new members is YOU.  Ask your friends who are not members to join.  Bring them to our dinner in May.

In closing, the Executive Board and I are always open to your feedback on making the Chapter everything that you expect it to be.

Still Serving!

Dennis Clippinger
