Presidents Message
Closing Out 2020

Dennis Clippinger - Serving Chapter President

Greetings,

As we approach the end of 2020, I wanted to take a few moments to reflect on this past year.  When we kicked off a new decade last January,  I don’t think any of us could have anticipated where we would stand as the year draws to a close.  There was so much promise of things to come.  Individually, you were probably like me with plans of exciting events and travel throughout the year.  We also had many things planned for the SW Oklahoma Chapter of MOAA in 2020.  Alas, it was not to be.  After a strong start in January and February, pretty much everything looked different by mid-March as the reality of the novel corona virus took hold.

Since that great start to 2020 we have all been swept up in the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.  Many of the activities and events that the SW Oklahoma Chapter of MOAA normally conducts or participates in during the year have been postponed and then cancelled.  However, one thing that has not been cancelled is the mission of MOAA and the Southwest Oklahoma Chapter has remained active in a number of ways.  Your Executive Board has continued to meet throughout the year; first via Zoom and then in person for a few months and now back to online as another surge in cases is occurring.

At the local level, we were able to award five $1000 scholarships to deserving area high school students as they continue their education at the university level.  For the first time, we were also able to select a Cameron ROTC cadet for a scholarship. That scholarship will be presented as soon as the cadet is under contract.  In addition, four deserving students were awarded scholarships through our Nationally Endowed Scholarship which was established in 2014.  Another important related event this year was final approval of the SW Oklahoma Chapter of MOAA Scholarship Fund, a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to which donations are fully tax deductible.  All members of the Chapter are also members of the Fund.  In 2020, there were four corporate donors and nineteen individual donors to the Fund which allowed us to fully fund our scholarships.  Hopefully in the future, we will be able to expand the number of scholarships we are able to award.

We were once again recognized at the national level with the Marvin Harris 5-star Comunications award for our website and as a 5-star Level of Excellence Chapter.  Members of the Chapter also participated in a virtual “Storm the Hill” and for a time, the Military Welcome Center at the Lawton Airport was reopened before having to close again.  There are many other events and activities that individual members have undertaken to represent the Chapter like the drive by parades at the Veterans Center.

We did hold our regular General Membership Meeting and luncheon in November as the planning for that started before the uptick in active cases.  Those who were able to attend the luncheon were treated to an excellent presentation by Pat Hollis.  As of right now, we do not plan to meet in person in January unless conditions warrant.  With the recent distribution of the first batch of a vaccine, there is reason for hope, but it appears that it will take some months for the vaccine to be widely available.  The Chapter remains strong and your continued membership is vital to our success. As we will not be able to meet in person, I ask that you renew your dues for the coming year online or by check to the Chapter’s PO Box.

In closing, from my family to yours, I wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and every hope and prayer for prosperous and better New Year in 2021.

Still Serving!
